• Played Little League and American Legion baseball.
• Lettered in baseball, basketball, football and track in high school.
• Earned a B.S. in Physical Education at University of South Carolina
• Played semi-pro ball for Madison (VA) in the Shenandoah Valley League in 1969-70.

• Chosen as All-Atlantic Coast Conference shortstop his senior season.
• Led 1972 Western Carolinas League third basemen in fielding (.957), assists (246), chance accepted (337), and double plays (22).
• Named to 1973 Western Carolinas League All-Star team.
