- Played Little League and American Legion baseball.
- Lettered in baseball, basketball, football and track in high school.
- Earned a B.S. in Physical Education at University of South Carolina
- Played semi-pro ball for Madison (VA) in the Shenandoah Valley League in 1969-70.

- Chosen as All-Atlantic Coast Conference shortstop his senior season.
- Led 1972 Western Carolinas League third basemen in fielding (.957), assists (246), chance accepted (337), and double plays (22).
- Named to 1973 Western Carolinas League All-Star team.
