Personal

• Resided in Bell, California in 1952.
• Self-identified as being of Swiss-German ancestry.
• Started as a pitcher and won his first game 10-5 with Bartlesville in the 1936 Western Association.
• Switched to the regular playing side because of his good hitting.
• Having 11 putouts in one game as well as two assists in 1939 was his biggest thrill.
• Never noticing a person with an arm in a sling he lists as a superstition.
