- Resided in Vancouver, Washington in 1953.
- Self-identified as being of Scottish-Irish-German ancestry.
[edit] Pre-professional career
- Attended Vancouver High School.
- Played baseball and basketball in high school.
- Twiced pitched Vancouver High School to district championships and once to the state title.
- Was selected as star of the 1950 All-Star game and pitched the State team to a victory over Seattle.
- Played Junior League Legion ball at Vancouver in 1949 and 1950.
- In 1950 his Junior League Legion team won the Southern Division and district titles.
- He was one strike away from a no-hit, no-run game with the Junior Legion team.
- In his first pro game he went in as a relief pitcher for Portland and set the side down without a hit with two strikeouts.
