- Botelho's father was a well known musician in Oakland and young Botelho gave up a promising future as a member of the "Four Moods" singing quartet. The youths, who attended high school and college together, had been tendered a contract by the Decca Recording Company.

- Graduated from Saint Elizabeth's High School in Oakland, California.
- Played baseball and basketball in high school.
- Played first string on the high school basketball team.
- Led the Catholic Athletic League with a batting average of .500 in his sophomore year in high school.
- Won 17 games and had one loss in three years in high school.
- Batted cleanup and played first base when he was not on the mound and never hit below .350 in high school.
- Played for Bill Erwin American Legion post in 1951 and had a 10-1 mark.
