Personal

  • Resided in Oakland, California in 1953.
  • Botelho's father was a well known musician in Oakland and young Botelho gave up a promising future as a member of the "Four Moods" singing quartet. The youths, who attended high school and college together, had been tendered a contract by the Decca Recording Company.

Pre-professional career

  • Graduated from Saint Elizabeth's High School in Oakland, California.
  • Played baseball and basketball in high school.
  • Played first string on the high school basketball team.
  • Led the Catholic Athletic League with a batting average of .500 in his sophomore year in high school.
  • Won 17 games and had one loss in three years in high school.
  • Batted cleanup and played first base when he was not on the mound and never hit below .350 in high school.
  • Played for Bill Erwin American Legion post in 1951 and had a 10-1 mark.
  • Was not defeated until his team was eliminated in the Northern California finals at Sacramento in American Legion play.
  • Batted cleanup on his American Legion team.
  • After graduating from high school he entered San Jose State and plans to continue his studies there during the off-season and then at the University of California.
