Personal

• Resided in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1952.
• Self-identified as being of Irish ancestry.
• During his first game with Greenville in 1938 he picked off two baserunners in one inning.
• Catching the opening day game at Saint Louis with Pittsburgh in 1946 was his greatest thrill.
• Broke his leg in 1946 and was out of the game for three years.

Pre-professional career

• Attended Cathedral High School in Richmod, Virginia.
• Played basketball and football in high school.
• Played American Legion ball in Richmond from 1933 to 1934.

Outside of baseball

• Worked for his father-in-law during the off-season in 1952.
• Saw service with the U. S. Navy during World War II.

Career notes

• Inactive, 1946-1948.
• Was a Major League Umpire between 1957 and 1965.^[1]
