The 1906 Boston Americans were just 3 years away from winning the Championship (1903) and 2 years away from winning the American League Pennant (1904), but finished in last place in 1906.

Things were much different in 1906 then they had been in 1903 and 1904. After losing their 1st 3 games to the New York Highlanders (April 14-17), and a 20 game losing streak in May (May 1 - 24, with 19 consecutive at home), they could not make up those losses and finished last (8th place in the American League) with a 49-105 record (.318 Winning Percentage). The longest winning streak of the season was 4 games, all on the road, from August 8 (a double header against Cleveland) through August 11 (1st game of a double header against Detroit).

Key players from the 1904 team were still on the roster: Pitchers Cy Young, Jesse Tannehill, Bill Dineen, Norwood Gibson and George Winter, Hobe Ferris (2B), Freddy Parent (SS), Jimmy Collins (Mgr and 3B), Kip Selbach (LF), Chick Stahl (CF), Buck Freeman (RF) and Lou Criger (C), but it wasn't the same in 1906 and the Americans (who were to be called the Red Sox 2 years later) could never get on track. Chick Stahl took over as Manager from Jimmy Collins after the team was 35-79 (.307 Winning Percentage) and Stahl's record was only a little better (14-26, .350 Winning Percentage).
