From the Mathews (Virginia) Journal, Thursday, April 22 1920:

Mr. Geo. E. Treakle, who had signed up with the Portsmouth Club of the Virginia League, has been forced to return home and give up playing baseball on account of the effects of being gassed while serving in the army in France.
