- The Midwest League played a 136 game, two-division, split-season schedule which began on April 13 and ended on August 30. The first half ended on June 19.
- An All-Star Game was played on June 20 between All-Star Teams representing the league's Northern and Southern Divisions. The South won by a 9-2 score[1].
- A two-tier championship playoff was held after the season. The best-of-three championship round was won by Quad City.
- Total 1979 attendance: 485,917.
