Resided in Sacramento, California in 1953.
Self-identified as being of Slavonian descent.
His rise to the pro ranks did not come the easy way; he suffered an attack of rheumatic fever while in the fifth grade at Holy Angels School an had a recurrence in 1947; he also suffered a fracture of a leg while sliding in 1948.
In his first game with the Sacramento Solons he was so excited that he had his uniform shirt on inside-out.

Attended Christian Brothers High School.
- Played baseball in high school.
Attended Saint Mary's College.
Played American Legion ball for the George Manhart Southside Legion.
Played American Legion ball for Elk Grove in the Sacramento County League and was signed by Sacramento in 1952 from the Sacramento County League; he was hitting .444 at the time of his signing.
