- Resided in Sacramento, California in 1953.
- Self-identified as being of Slavonian descent.
- His rise to the pro ranks did not come the easy way; he suffered an attack of rheumatic fever while in the fifth grade at Holy Angels School an had a recurrence in 1947; he also suffered a fracture of a leg while sliding in 1948.
- In his first game with the Sacramento Solons he was so excited that he had his uniform shirt on inside-out.
[edit] Pre-professional career
- Attended Christian Brothers High School.
- Played baseball in high school.
- Attended Saint Mary's College.
- Played American Legion ball for the George Manhart Southside Legion.
- Played American Legion ball for Elk Grove in the Sacramento County League and was signed by Sacramento in 1952 from the Sacramento County League; he was hitting .444 at the time of his signing.
