Professional career

• Attended high school in Childress, Texas.
  • Did not paricipated in any sports in high school.
• Says his greatest thrill was breaking two West Texas-New Mexico League records in 1946, winning the most games with 27 and striking out 297 batters.

Achievements

• Led the 1948 Central League in complete games pitched with 25 and strikeouts with 187.
• Tied for the lead in for most shutouts pitched with 4 in the 1948 Central League.

Outside of baseball

• In the military in the 1943, 1944, and 1945 seasons.
• Served with the 76th Infantry Division in France and Belgium.
• Won the Bronze Star and three battle stars.
