Sportswriter Fred Lieb said that Bill who sports the nicknames "Broadway Bill and "Good Time Bill" was
more interested in playing around than in exercising his innate talent for baseball.
During the seasons of 1924-1927 he displayed his great abilities. In 1925 his most complete season, he cracked out 202 hits, including 39 doubles and hit .356. Two years after he hit .356 the Philadelphia A's traded him to the Washington Senators. When he refused to report without a raise, he was suspended for the season and never again played in the majors.
