  • In high school, lettered in baseball and football.
  • Once scored four touchdowns in a high school football game.
  • Once pitched a no-hit, no-run game with 17 strikeouts and only one walk.

  • On August 20, 1964, was the victim of a bat-swinging attack by Raleigh third baseman Jose Laboy. Laboy bunted down the first base line and when Middledorf fielded the ball, Laboy charged him with his bat. Laboy insisted that he had been thrown at. Laboy was arrested, charged with "assault with a deadly weapon" and received a 30-day suspended sentence in Rocky Mount city court and a three-day suspension from the league.
