Played baseball, football, and basketball in high school. Was named to the All-Alameda County Baseball team and won the school's "Billy Martin Trophy" as player of the year. Signed by Danny Reagan for the Philadelphia Phillies. Served in the U.S. Army for six months under the Reserve Training Plan and was recalled to active duty for one year in October 1961^[1].
