- Playing against a Major League barnstorming team at the age of 15, and getting two hits off Murry Dickson, one hit off Virgil Trucks and a walk off Jim Hearn was his biggest thrill in baseball.

- Named to the All-State prep baseball team for four years.
- Holds state prep individual basketball scoring record with 37 points.
- Attended the University Of Kentucky for two years.
- Named to the Southeastern Conference All-Star team in baseball in his freshmen year.
- Attended Arkansas State College during the off-season as of 1953.
