• Resided in Visalia, California in 1952 and in Bixby, Oklahoma in 1955.
• Hobby was "movies" in 1952.

• Graduated from Visalia High School in 1951.
• Also attended Harrisburg, Oregon High School.
• Played baseball, basketball, and track in high school.
• Attended the College of The Sequoias.
• Played semi-pro ball for Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.

• Was a farm worker during the off-season in 1952.
• Served in the U.S. Army for two years, being discharged just prior to the start of the 1955 season.

• Was signed to his first pro contract by Howard Haak of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
