Played basketball and baseball in high school. Was captain of the baseball team his senior season, and was named All-Chicago his junior and senior years. Was signed for the Chicago Cubs by Bill Prince. On May 22, 1958 he pitched a 17-inning 2-0 shutout; 11 innings were hitless and in nine innings he retired the side in order. Railroad brakeman in the off-season[1].
