- Attended Fremont High School in Oakland, California.
- Played baseball, basketball and football in high school.
- Won all city honors in baseball and football for two years while in high school.

- Got three hits in his first with Nazareth in the 1947 North Atlantic League but his team lost.
- Got a pinch hit home run in San Francisco in his second time at bat in the Pacific Coast League to help the Seattle Rainiers win a 17 inning contest; incidentally it was the first pro game his parents saw him play.
- Broke the Inter State League record in 1948 by getting five hits in five trips to the plate and driving in eight runs.

- Delivered new cars during the off-season in 1952.
- Served in the U.S. Navy for 18 months in 1945 and 1946.
