- Played baseball and football in high school, captained the baseball team and was All-City catcher.
- Played American Legion ball for Leonard Wood Post, 1936 National runners-up.

- Hit a pinch-hit home run in his first pro game.
- Led the 1952 Pioneer League in most times hit by pitcher with 12.
- Tied for the lead in doubles with 35 in the 1952 Pioneer League.
- Led the 1952 Pioneer League catchers in putouts with 745, assists with 103 (tying the league record), double plays with 15 (setting a new league record), and runners caught stealing with 60.
- Missed the 1952 Pioneer League batting championship by 3/10's of a point.
