• Self-identified as being of Irish ancestry.
• Started his pro career in 1946 with Houston but immediately was sent to Columbus, Georgia.

• Won letters in baseball, football and wrestling in high school.
• Attended Omaha University.
• Won a letter in football at Omaha University.
• Played American Legion ball in Omaha.

• Led the 1950 Western International League in triples with 14.
• Was third in batting average with .345 in the 1950 Western International League.
