Danny Taylor embodied the American Dream. He was born in a small coal mining town. His father died when he was four, leaving his mother to bring up eight children. From the time he was five, Danny plowed, hoed weeds, fed chickens and carried coal. He went to work full time in the mines when he was 13. He started playing baseball when he was 15 an prayed every night for a chance to play major league ball. At 25 he hit a home run in his first at bat. Danny was a journeyman outfielder who did not see regular action until he joined Brooklyn in 1932. He batted .319 that season and never hit less than .290 in five seasons as a popular Dodger.
