[edit] Pre-professional career

  • Played baseball, basketball, and football in high school.
  • Did not pitch until his senior year of high school and was named All-Mission Valley League and All-East Bay teams.
  • In 1971, he was named to the All-Pacific Coast Athletic Association First Team and NCAA All-District Eight second team.
  • In 1972, he was named to All-Conference, All-District, NCAA College All-American, and The Sporting News' College All-American first teams and the conference's MVP.
  • In 1971, he pitched for Boulder Collegians and helped lead club to Colorado state title and fourth-place in National Baseball Congress tournament.
  • In 1972, he played on US college all-star team which toured Japan.
