Once scored 41 points in a high school football game and was named to the High School All-American football team.[1] Led Clemson with a 5.4-yard rushing average in 1961, caught 17 passes for 237 yards and returned eight punts for 179 yards and a touchdown.[2] Hit .296 in three years of varsity at Clemson and was named All-Atlantic Coast Conference second team at shortstop in 1961 and 1962, and first team in 1963. Was co-captain of both football and baseball teams his senior year[1].
