= Pre-professional career
- Played baseball, basketball, and football in high school.
- Earned a A.B. in Psychology at Stanford University, where he was unanimous selection as All-California Intercollegiate Baseball Association shortstop as a sophomore and junior.
- Led Stanford University to second place finish in the 1967 College World Series.
- Was selected to team which represented the U.S. at the World Amateur Baseball Tournament in Honolulu in 1966,
- In 1966, he played semi-pro ball for Wichita Service Auto Glass, helping to lad team to Kansas state championship and being named to all-state team.
- In 1967, he played for the Boulder Collegians, hitting .421 with 15 doubles, 10 HRs, and 42 RBI i leading team to Colorado semi-pro title and National Baseball Congress title.
