When the St.Louis Browns signed Fred Haney as manager in 1939 his first offical act was to sign Frank as his pitching coach. Prior to signing with the Browns Franks minor league career began in 1917 making it the majors with the Chicago White Sox in 1918 and 1919. Then back to the minors from 1920 through 1938 primarly in the PCL, from 1935 through 1938 he was a player manager. During this time he became known as the keenest mentor of young pitchers. He was also the last of the PCL spitball pitchers. The pitching records he established sound like something ultra fictional. Wining 316 minor league games. He pitched 53 consecutive innings without permitting a base on balls. He won 33 games out of 34 in 1930 and 1931, starting and finishing every game. Frank was one the best hitting pitchers of all time. From age 22 to 37 he hit .290 and had a slugging average of .470, he also hit 73 home runs. After becoming a coach with the Browns in 1939 he continue coaching with the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers and then with the New York Giants and San Francisco Giants.
