At the end of the 1952 season when Gene Black was with the Marion (NC) Marauders of the Class D Western Carolina League, a newspaper article reported the following regarding his future plans: "Gene Black is undecided what he will do, but may work for a construction company at his home in Columbia, S.C. Gene had three chances to sign with the Cincinnati Reds, turned them all down, and now he's sorry."[1]
