• Self-identified as being of Swedish-English ancestry.

• Graduated from Washburn High School in Minneapolis in 1955.
• Played baseball, basketball and football in high school.
• Named to the All-State baseball team and was Most Valuable Player in football in Minneapolis in his senior year.
• Attended the University Of Minnesota.
• Played American Legion ball.
