- Played basketball, baseball, and soccer in high school, helping teams to Nassau County chapmionship in all three sports his senior year.
- Attended Columbia University for 1.5 years and played varsity baseball, but graduated from Hofstra University.
- Signed by Artie Dede, New York Yankees, for a bonus estimated between $50,000 and $100,000.

- Went 18-0 and fanned 217 in 117 IP in his senior high school season
- Received the 1960 "Lou Gehrig Memorial Award" as the MVP in the annual Hearst Sandlot game at Yankee Stadium for striking out 7 batters in three innings pitched.
- Fanned 209 batters in 149 innings at 1961 Modesto
