Profile

Personal

  • Getting a homerun off Herb Pennock to win the game and racing Ty Cobb and beating the latter were his greatest baseball thrills.
  • Witnessing Johnny Neun executing an unassisted triple play and watching Babe Herman tumbling over the fence in Cincinnati were the most unusual plays he saw.

Pre-professional career

  • Attended high school in Evansville but did not participate in sports.

Contract signing

  • Signed to his first pro contract by Pat Patterson of Vernon of the Pacific Coast League, then a scout for Eddie Maier's Vernon Club. Jackie's contract read, through the insistence of his brother, that he could not be "farmed" out. Ray French and Gordon Slade were shortstops on the team and consequently during the first four months Jackie road the bench. Jackie managed to play in 33 games.
