One of a catcher's weapons is distracting the hitter. Jake barraged batters with zany chatter or singing as well as doing mock pitch-by-broadcasts to distract hitters. He was a capable receiver, leading the AL in double plays in 1941, and assists and double plays in 1942. He also caught the entire All-Star game in 1942.
