- His high school team won the Texas state championship on his graduation day.
- Played American Legion ball.
- Earned a B.A. in Mathematics at Texas Christian University.
- Was All-SWC outfielder in 1962-63-64. Batted .357 in 1964.
- Helped lead team to SWC title in 1963.

- Led 1965 Appalachian League in batting, doubles, RBI, bases on balls, and stolen bases.
- Named to 1965 Appalachian League All-Star team.

- Served in US Marine Corps for six months under the Reserve Training program.
