[edit] Pre-professional career

• His high school team won the Texas state championship on his graduation day.
• Played American Legion ball.
• Earned a B.A. in Mathematics at Texas Christian University.
• Was All-SWC outfielder in 1962-63-64. Batted .357 in 1964.
• Helped lead team to SWC title in 1963.

• Led 1965 Appalachian League in batting, doubles, RBI, bases on balls, and stolen bases.
• Named to 1965 Appalachian League All-Star team.

• Served in US Marine Corps for six months under the Reserve Training program.
