[edit] Pre-professional career
- Played Little League, Pony League and American Legion ball.
- Played baseball and football in high school.
- Majored in English at Southern Illinois University and in 1968, led team to NCAA District Four championship and second place in the College World Series.
- In 1968, played semi-pro ball for Mobridge (S.D.) Lakers in the Basin League; he batted .232 in 46 games.

- Led the 1970 California League in triples and was named Honorable Mention on the league's all-star team.
