- Resided in San Francisco, California in 1952 and 1953.
- Self-identified as being of Scottish-Irish ancestry.
- Listed hobbies as movies, golf and horses.
- Won his first game 10-1 giving up four hits when he started his pro career with in 1946 with Lynn of the New England League.
- Pitching against the Detroit Tigers in a spring training game, hitting a double to tie the score and then winning 2-1 in the ninth inning was his biggest thrill; he held the Tigers to but three hits and picked two runners off first base.

- Played baseball and baskeball at high school.

- Saw action in Iwo Jima, Japan and other hot spots during the war.
