- Attended high school in San Bernardino, California.
- Played baseball in high school.
- Made the All-Citrus Belt League baseball team in high school.
- Received a B.A. Degree from the University of California.
- Won All-Pacific Coast Conference honors.
- Played American Legion ball.
- Got a hit in his first trip on to the plate on the first ball pitched in his first pro game with Albuquerque in the 1949 West Texas-New Mexico League.

- Once hit three home runs in one game, the first two tying the contest and the third winning it; this victory gave his team the semi-pro championship.

- Returned to the Oakland Oaks for the 1953 season after serving two years in the Armed Forces.
