John F. Doran, the crack pitcher of the New Haven (Atlantic Association) Base Ball club, who assisted materially in winning the pennant of 1890 for that team and who will play with Johnny Ward's Brooklyn wonders next season, it is said, is one of the youngest pitchers in the list of noted professionals. He was born in New Jersey twenty years ago, stands 5ft. 4in. high, and weighs 160lbs. Although he has been with a prominent base ball organization but one year, his pitching with New Haven has placed him alongside of the crack twirlers of the National and Players' leagues. His first work of note was with the Elmiras, of the Central League, two years ago, when he attracted attention by making the Newarks hustle. Powers, of the Jersey City Club, became interested in the young twirler and gave him a chance with the Jersey Citys, but Doran failed to make a good impression and was released after he had played a few games. He next went to New Haven, but he was rather wild and did not develop any remarkable twirling talent until the present season, when he began pitching a very accurate and puzzling ball. He has remarkable control of the sphere for a left-handed pitcher, and his throwing is not only swift, but intelligent also. [1]
