Helped pitch Yakima Valley JC to state junior college championships in 1961-62. Played American Legion ball and pitched Lewiston team to Idaho state championship. Signed to first contract by Eddie Taylor, New York Yankees. Was selected by Philadelphia Phillies in the first-year player draft, November 1962.
