Pre-professional career

  • In 1966, helped lead his Colt League team to sectional and regional championships.
  • In 1967, helped pitch his American Legion team to fourth place in state tournament and was member of a Legion All-Star team which played a Japanese All-Star club at Long Beach, California.
  • Compiled a 12-2 record and a 1.18 ERA during his 1967 high school season; his team finished second in the California Interscholastic Federation tournament.
  • Was named to All-Sunset League and All-Orange County first teams and All-CIF Class AAA third team.

  • In the winter of 1971, he pitched for Guasave of the Mexican Pacific League.
