Born in Beverly, son of the late Philip and Helena (Bernier) Belanger, he had lived in Beverly all of his life. Mr. Belanger served his country during WWII in the United States Coast Guard.

Mr. Belanger was a graduate of Beverly High School in the class of 1935. He played 2nd and 3rd base on the baseball team and is considered one of the best infield players ever at BHS. He had a sure pair of hands, a strong throwing arm and batted over.300 with many doubles and home runs. He played guard on the basketball team and was usually the high scorer. In his senior year he led his team to the Olde Tech Tournament held at the Boston Garden.

After high school he played semi-pro basketball for the competitive Beverly City Club, a team that played the top semi-pro teams in New England. His general scintillating performances of ball handling and leading scorer were well documented.

Lucien played pro baseball in the Philadelphia Athletics minor league system and was the outstanding player in the Eastern Shore League, He also played competitive baseball in the military and after WWII played in the New England League for Lawrence, where he led the league in home runs and doubles.

People who saw Lucien Belanger play rated him as the best baseball-basketball combination player at BHS. Perhaps Lucien's greatest attribute was that he was a very classy gentleman, who represented himself, his family and his community with the highest regard.

Mr. Belanger was employed with Merrimack Valley Distributing Company for 35 years. He was a sales man for the company and retired in 1983. He was an avid golfer and was a member of the Beverly Golf and Tennis Club.
