  • He injured his arm in spring training with the Brooklyn Tip-Tops in 1915.

  • He had also hurt his arm while pitching for Portsmouth in the Virginia League in 1912. When they didn't pay him while he was laid up, he protested to the National Board, which declared him a free agent.
