Profile

Mickey seemed destined for a New York career. He made his professional start as a member of the Yankees farm organization in 1935 at Bassett,Va. He ranks winning a position on the Bassett team as his greatest baseball thrill, for he hitch-hiked 500 miles from his home in Luzerne to get it. From Bassett he traveled the same road as so many of the Yankee ball players, through Norfolk, Binghamton and Newark. With Joe Gordon as competition at second base his chances were not favorable making it to Yankee Stadium. He was traded on Dec. 27,1939[1]

As an infield regular at the Polo Grounds, Mickey was a play-maker and consistent hitter. He led the league's second baseman in fielding in 1942, but his best year was 1943, just before his entry into the service when he hit .314.
