[edit] Pre-professional career
- Played baseball, basketball, and football in high school.
- Earned a B.A. in Business Administration at Ohio University.
- Led Ohio University to Mid-American Conference championships in 1969-70-71, and NCAA District Four title and fourth place in College World Series in 1970.
- Played semi-pro ball in the Central Illinois Collegiate League for Peoria in 1969 and Springfield in 1970.
