  • Resided in Riverside, Illinois in 1952 and 1953.
  • Self-identified as being of English-Irish ancestry.
  • Listed hobbies as bowling, watching football and hockey games.
  • Pitching to 28 batters and allowing but three hits and two walks as his team made five double plays to help him beat Washington 1-0 was his greatest baseball thrill.
  • Pitching a no-hitter against the New York Yankess on July 8, 1943 until two men were out in the ninth inning when Joe Gordon, who ironically is Grove's manager at Sacramento, laced out a double and then he retired the next batter to end the game was his biggest disappointment.
  • Nickname "Orv" per 1952 PCL Thumbnail Sketches.

  • Attended Waywood, Illinois High School.
  • Starred in baseball, football and basketball for three years in high school.
  • Attended Elmhurst College in Illinois but did not graduate and did not participate in sports because he already was in professional baseball.

  • Was secretary and treasurer of a contracting concern during the off-season in 1952.
