Student career: Played football, basketball and baseball, earning 10 letters, 4 in baseball. Was batting champion as a freshman. Co-captain of football and baseball teams. League champions in baseball, three years. Four years on All-Star baseball team. Enrolled at Boston College during off-season. [1]. Amateur career: Played American Legion ball for the state and district titlists in 1960. Named the Legion's top rookie and best sportsmanship in 1956. Legion MVP in 1958[1].
