Outside of Baseball
- In 1948, the wounded war veteran was part of a three-week 3,000 mile tour of veterans hospitals in five southern states. While on the tour, sponsored by Liggett & Myers Tobacco Co and The Sporting News, he handed out cartons of cigarettes, baseballs autographed by New York Giants, and copies of The Sporting News to wounded servicemen and hospitalized veterans.[1]
