The Pirates thought very highly of young Pete when they traded for him in 1927. To get Pete and utility infielder Sparky Adams they gave up star outfielder and future Hall of Famer Kiki Cuyler. But finding a steady spot in the Pirates outfield would be no easy task. Pittsburgh already had the Waner brothers. Pete was playing very well in 1928 hitting .311 with 10 doubles,4 triples and 5 home runs in only 177 plate appearances when he crashed into the wall while chasing a long fly ball. He suffered a concussion that ended a promising Major League career.
