Pre-professional career

  • Played baseball, basketball, and football in at Chotawatchee High.
  • Played basketball and baseball at Roseville High.
  • Played American Legion ball in both Florida and California.
  • Pitched for the Humboldt Crabs of Eureka; team was 1963 state semi-pro champions.

Achievements

  • In high school, pitched a no-hitter against Yuba City, along with 10 one-hitters.
  • Was named to All-State team as a member of the Humboldt Crabs.
  • In National Baseball Congress tournament in Wichita, he allowed only two runs in 11 innings, while striking out 14.
  • Went 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA in the 1963 Arizona Instructional League for the Giants team.
