• Played baseball, basketball, and football in high school.
• Helped pitch school to Clas 4-A Texas state quarterfinals in 1972.
• Played Little League, American Legion and Connie Mack ball.
• Helped pitch his Connie Mack team to a national championship in 1970 and 1971.

• Was named to 1973 Carolina League All-Star team and was named the league's "Pitcher of the Year".
• Led 1973 Carolina League in innings pitched (203) and winning percentage (.778).
