Played football, basketball, and baseball in high school. Was named to the All-State baseball team his senior season[1]. Played two years of baseball at Columbia Basin Junior College where he earned an A.A. degree and compiled an 11-7 record. He also played basketball. At Gomzaga, he also played baseball and basketball[1]. Was signed for the New York Yankees by Eddie Taylor. In his first professional game, he pitched a seven-inning no-hit, no-run game against Boise on June 19, 1962[1].
