edit

Born and raised in Oak Park, Ill., Rick Bender attended Oak Park and River Forest High School. There he played for legendary coach Jack Kaiser, who played college ball at Purdue with Moose Skowron. Bender went on to play Division I baseball at Davidson College in North Carolina where he was a four-year starter, first as an outfielder before becoming a three-time, first-team all-conference shortstop for the Wildcats. He set several career records at Davidson, including his 237 hits which stood for nine years. After being passed up in the 1993 draft following his graduation, he signed with the Portsmouth Explorers in the newly formed Frontier League. Bender saw action at both infield and outfield corners and occasionally shortstop while ranking among the team leaders in average, slugging and OPS. The following year he signed with the Beaumont Bullfrogs in the Texas-Louisiana League, then played two more years in the league with the Alexandria Aces, exclusively at shortstop at both stops. During the off-season, Bender returned to his alma mater to serve as an assistant coach, a role he filled for three years, before moving into media relations. He spent 11 years at Davidson in sports information, eight as the director, and then was hired at Dartmouth College in the Ivy league as its Director of Varsity Athletics Communications. [1]
